How to play
Two minutes of reading, and you can run a game.
The idea
A few players are secretly in the mafia. Nobody else knows who they are. The game goes night, day, night, day, until one side wins.
At night the mafia pick one person to take out of the game. In the day everyone talks about who it might be, then votes. Whoever gets the most votes is out.
The town wins when the last mafia player is out. The mafia win when there are as many of them left as there are other players, because from then on they can win every vote.
What you need
5 or more people in the same room, each with a phone. If someone wants to run the game instead of playing, you need one more person than that.
Starting a game
- One person taps Start a game and types their name.
- They read out the six letter room code. Everyone else taps Join a game and types it in.
- The host chooses who runs the game, the app or a person, and taps Start.
Everyone then holds their phone to themselves and looks at their role. Once everyone has tapped Got it, the first day begins.
When the app runs the game
At night everybody taps something. The mafia pick a person. The doctor picks someone to protect. The detective picks someone to check. Everyone else answers a simple question like “who do you suspect?”.
Every screen looks the same and takes the same number of taps, so watching somebody else tells you nothing about their role.
When a person runs the game
Pick a narrator and it works the old way. Everyone closes their eyes. The narrator calls each role in turn, out loud. The mafia point at someone. The narrator then taps that person on their own phone, and the game moves on.
Phones are only used for two things: seeing your own role, and voting.
The day
The first day has no vote. It is there so everyone can hear each other speak once before the accusations start.
After that, each day has a discussion and then a vote. Tap I have said my piece when you are done talking. Once everyone has, the vote begins, so nobody has to sit and wait for a timer.
In the vote you pick a name, or you pick Nobody. The vote ends as soon as everyone has answered.
Tips for a good game
- Sit in a circle, so everyone can see everyone.
- Leave the settings alone for your first game. They are already balanced.
- Quiet players get voted out for being quiet. Say something, even if it is wrong.
- If a phone runs out of battery, the host can give that player a code to get back in on another phone, with the same role.
